Pop Quiz: Can you quote the next phrase Jesus said after Luke 22:29?
“And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that…”
So far, no one I’ve talked to has been able to complete the verse. By the way, if you’re tripping on “confer”, it gets translated as “grant”, “appoint” or “make”. (I’m filling up some space with words so you don’t see the answer yet. Now I’m writing more words to make sure it doesn’t show up in the email preview.)
It’s the only place I can find in the New Testament that explains why God is giving us the kingdom. The next phrase Jesus says is “so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom”.
It’s like Jesus is a Prince, and he wants to be with his subjects, but we’re not royalty, so he appoints us positions in his kingdom, and then we can eat at his table. He went through all this trouble just so he could eat with us!?
Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come.” Mt 22:1-3
“I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.” – Mt 8:11
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. – Rev 3:20
“The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.” – Mt 25:10
“Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” – Lk 14:15
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.” – Rev 19:9
Jesus spent a lot of time eating with people when he was on earth. I think he likes us.
