Love this movie. The first time I saw it I tried so hard not to wail out loud that I was convulsing and shaking the whole row of seats in the movie theatre. It seems so prophetic for our time. Young people have different issues today, but the same potential.
This morning I got thinking: I wonder how what I saw in the movie compares with “Safe Church“? As suspected, almost no similarities:
- Baptism – right away, without a membership class first
- Communion – they prayed and ate together in the common house
- Spiritual Gifts – healings, deliverance, prophecy
- Church Leadership – Chuck and Lonnie shared it vs one leader
- Worship Style – congregation involved, even leading
- Church Discipline – took a stand and his elders had to join or leave
- Sharing Possessions – shared houses, food, etc., even a car
- Meeting in Homes – their community house
- Apostolic Authority – somewhat treated Lonnie like that
- Persecution – opposition from the established church
- Missionary Zeal – handing out tracts everywhere
- Prayer and Fasting – lots of prayer; I don’t think there was fasting
- Women’s Roles – didn’t really show women in leadership roles
- Discipleship – lots of examples of personal discipleship vs programs
- Kingdom of God – counter-cultural at its roots
Messy, but effective.
