You know how 1 Co 12 says the church is like Christ’s body? Back then it was a simple analogy:
If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. – 1 Co 12:17-20
Now we know more about the different “parts”: 37 trillion cells. They operate inside complex interdependent systems, like cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, nervous, respiratory, endocrine, immune and digestive.
All these things are managed by the brain, just like the church is led by Jesus.
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church – Eph 1:22
Back in the day, I could imagine being, for example, a hand, and thinking, “OK, I can manage this thing. It’s not easy, but I can move the legs, turn the head, get the jaw moving and lead this body.”
Now it’s getting more ridiculous. Imagine being an all-star T-cell in the immune system. You could think you’re quite the disease fighter. But you’re one of 37,000,000,000,000! You have no idea where you even are in the body, what all the other systems are doing, or how to respond. All you can do is trust the head and do your job.
All we can do is trust our Head and do what He says.
