In the beginning, Adam and Eve were “blessed”, “very good”, in fellowship with God and working away in the garden.
When they sinned, they covered their nakedness, hid and blamed. Sin makes us do that: we close up to protect ourselves from judgement.
But we all know that closing up also keeps us from receiving anything good. So maybe God gave us suffering to open us back up.
We all want to be cool, in control and faultless. This is the opposite of humble, vulnerable and accessible – the posture needed to receive love.
Suffering that’s too much for us to bear causes us to let the love of others/God in and results in the glory of intimate friendship:
- We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. – 2 Corinthians 1:8
- If one part suffers, every part suffers with it – 1 Corinthians 12:26
- But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. – 1 Peter 4:13
As I look back on my life, my best friendships were formed not through endless beach volleyball and BBQ’s. They were forged through suffering. I’m guessing your life is the same.
The call to follow Jesus is the call to suffer so his love can get in, so we can fully enter into his kingdom of love: “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” – Acts 14:22.
God is always calling us to endure suffering (not escape it, not always getting healed or rescued, not running away, not getting crushed by it) so his love can fill us: “We glory in our sufferings… because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts” – Romans 5:3-5.
Hear the intimacy in Paul’s words: not “crucified like Christ”, but “crucified with Christ”. They became one through suffering: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” – Galatians 2:20
Let’s not miss out on that ourselves, and let’s not protect others from truly knowing God: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings” – Philippians 3:10
