The New Testament is full of hope. Here are most of the verses, in the order they appear. “Jesus, just as the nations put their hope in you, I do the same now. Let me feel in my body the peace that comes from putting my hope in you.”
- In his name the nations will put their hope – Mt 12:21
- my body also will rest in hope – Ac 2:26
They hoped for the resurrection of the dead. “Father, thank you that this life is not all there is. Thank you that one day I will rise and be with you and see your face. Thank you for the ultimate hope.”
- because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead – Ac 23:6
- I have the same hope… that there will be a resurrection – Ac 24:15
- because of my hope in what God has promised our ancestors – Ac 26:6
- it is because of this hope – Ac 27:20
- because of the hope of Israel – Ac 28:20
They hoped when it wasn’t going well. “God, I recognize my circumstances are insurmountable, yet I choose to hope in you. Thank you for developing hope in me through suffering. I will not be disappointed: all creation will be liberated.”
- Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed – Ro 4:18
- we boast in the hope of the glory of God – Ro 5:2
- suffering produces perseverance…, character and… hope – Ro 5:3-4
- hope does not put us to shame – Ro 5:5
- in hope that the creation itself will be liberated – Ro 8:20-21
They hoped longer than they wanted to. “Lord, I have been waiting a long, long time for some of my hopes to be realized. I choose to believe your promises. I choose joyful anticipation, no matter how long it takes.”
- For in this hope we were saved – Ro 8:24
- Who hopes for what they already have? – Ro 8:24
- we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently – Ro 8:25
- Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer – Ro 12:12
- was written to teach us, so that… we might have hope – Ro 15:4
They hoped for others. “Holy Spirit, may your hope flood the nations and fill the earth. May your church overflow with hope that results in a great harvest of joy, as many, many people discover hope in you.”
- in him the Gentiles will hope – Ro 15:12
- May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace – Ro 15:13
- overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit – Ro 15:13
- in the hope of sharing in the harvest – 1 Co 9:10
Their hope was secure. “Christ, my hope is in you, in your love. You are my firm foundation. You are the one who has all things under his command. You are the King, the only one who’s promises will come true. Therefore I am confident in you.”
- [love] always hopes – 1 Co 13:7
- these three remain: faith, hope and love – 1 Co 13:13
- we have hope in Christ – 1 Co 15:19
- our hope for you is firm – 2 Co 1:7
- On him we have set our hope – 2 Co 1:10
- since we have such a hope, we are very bold – 2 Co 3:12
They were called into hope. “Jesus, thank you for giving us hope, when we had no hope. Thank you for calling us out of hopelessness into a life defined by hope. Thank you for filling us with faith and love because of this hope.”
- we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope – Gal 5:5
- we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ – Eph 1:12
- that you may know the hope to which he has called you – Eph 1:18
- you were called to one hope when you were called – Eph 4:4
- faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you – Col 1:5
They held firmly to hope. “Lord Jesus, I commit once again to not moving outside of your hope. You are the hope of glory. You inspire me to endure. I receive this hope as protection against discouragement.”
- do not move from the hope held out in the gospel – Col 1:23
- Christ in you, the hope of glory – Col 1:27
- your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ – 1 Th 1:3
- the hope of salvation as a helmet – 1 Th 5:8
Their hope was in God. “Living God, my hope is not just in a promise. My hope is in you. That is why I’m eternally encouraged. You are my hope. My hope is not just in something written down. You are alive and with me.”
- by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope – 2 Th 2:16
- God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope – 1 Ti 1:1
- because we have put our hope in the living God – 1 Ti 4:10
Their hope made them pray. “God, my hope is in you, so I pray. I pray you would provide for the people I love, and that for those not following you that you would grant them the joy of repentance. I can do nothing without you. My hope for them is entirely in you.”
- puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray – 1 Ti 5:5
- but to put their hope in God, who richly provides – 1 Ti 6:17
- in the hope that God will grant them repentance – 2 Ti 2:25
They hoped for glory. “God, I long for your glory, your essence, your intimate and wonderful presence. Thank you for the tastes of it now. But I long to see all your glory. I wonder. I imagine. I get glimpses. But one day, one day I will be in your glory. And then every day after, forever.”
- in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised – Tit 1:2
- we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory – Tit 2:13
- having the hope of eternal life – Tit 3:7
- the hope in which we glory – Heb 3:6
They hoped for the whole promise to be fulfilled. “Father, we long to take hold of the fullness of your glory. We dare to believe that all our hopes in you will be satisfied one day. We reject temptations for instant gratification and hold on to the secure hope we have in you.”
- so that what you hope for may be fully realized – Heb 6:11
- take hold of the hope set before us – Heb 6:18
- We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure – Heb 6:19
- a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God – Heb 7:19
- Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess – Heb 10:23
- Now faith is confidence in what we hope for – Heb 11:1
They were re-born with a different hope. “Spirit of God, reorient me to hope in you. Not in fleeting pleasures and comforts, not in positive thinking and good wishes, not even in your personal promises and prophetic words. I put my faith and hope in God himself, and the coming revealing of Jesus Christ.”
- he has given us new birth into a living hope – 1 Pe 1:3
- set your hope on the grace… when Jesus Christ is revealed – 1 Pe 1:13
- so your faith and hope are in God – 1 Pe 1:21
They talked about hope. “God, thank you for examples around me of people who’s hope is firm. Thank you for the people who explain to me why they can persevere, what motivates them when it’s hard. Thank you for the power of hoping in you, that purifies everything in my life as it draws me back into your kingdom.”
- the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God – 1 Pe 3:5
- give the reason for the hope that you have – 1 Pe 3:15
- All who have this hope in him purify themselves – 1 Jn 3:3
