Think of the best possible things you can imagine. And then compare them to God. Is God more beautiful than a sunset? Smarter than AI? Funnier than your favourite show? Easier to be with than a video game? More exciting than a 4th quarter finish? More comforting than your favourite food? Stronger than your urges? More loving than your mom? Kinder than your grade 2 teacher?
Here are some ways the Bible writers thought about God, with my comparisons. Feel free to think of your own.
Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? – Exodus 15:11
- more majestic than the stars
- holier than Mount Sinai
- more awesome than a hurricane
- more glorious than a world championship
- more wondrous than the deep sea
There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides across the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!’ – Deuteronomy 33:26-27
- more willing to help than parents
- more eternal than the universe
- more of a refuge than money
- more powerful than armies
Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way – 1 Kings 8:23
- more loving than a spouse
God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him? – Job 36:22
- more exalted than a famous actor
- more powerful than demons
- a better teacher than YouTube
My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.” – Psalm 35:10
- a better saviour than the government
- better protection than insurance
Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? – Psalm 113:5-6
- a higher perspective than NASA
Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come—yes, let them foretell what will come. – Isaiah 44:7
- knows more about history than Wikipedia
- knows more about the future than stock analysts
Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. – Micah 7:18
- more forgiving than grandparents
- more generous than philanthropists
- more delightful than entertainment
- more merciful than charities
Our God is wonderful in every way we can imagine. If you’re not spending time with him, you must be believing something else. Don’t let the enemy rob you of being close to Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit if anything about how you see God is not lining up with the verses above.
