Suffering is Normal

Sometimes we see suffering as an interruption to normal life.

I went through each chapter in the New Testament to see if we should expect suffering to be part of our lives as Christians.

Here are my notes….

Matthew

  • 1 Unwilling to put her to shame
  • 2 Weeping for her children; refused comfort
  • 3 His food was locusts and wild honey
  • 4 After fasting forty days, he was hungry
  • 5 Blessed are those who mourn
  • 6 When you fast, wash your face
  • 7 The way is hard that leads to life
  • 8 The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head
  • 9 They will mourn when the bridegroom is taken
  • 10 When they persecute you, flee to the next town
  • 11 John is in prison and asks if Jesus is the one
  • 12 The Pharisees conspired against him
  • 13 And they took offense at him
  • 14 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison
  • 15 This people honors me with their lips, but…
  • 16 Must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things
  • 17 And they were greatly distressed
  • 18 Forgive your brother from your heart
  • 19 A camel to go through the eye of a needle
  • 20 Mocked and flogged and crucified
  • 21 Your king is humble, mounted on a donkey
  • 22 Seized his servants, treated them shamefully
  • 23 Your house is left to you desolate
  • 24 There will be great tribulation
  • 25 Take the talent from him
  • 26 Jesus began to be sorrowful and troubled
  • 27 They spit on him and struck him on the head
  • 28 –

Mark

  • 1 And he was in the wilderness forty days
  • 2 when the bridegroom is taken, they will fast
  • 3 Crowd gathered so they could not even eat
  • 4 Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?
  • 5 They began to beg Jesus to depart
  • 6 Herod seized John and bound him in prison
  • 7 –
  • 8 The Christ must suffer many things
  • 9 Going to be delivered into the hands of men
  • 10 Receive a hundredfold… with persecutions
  • 11 –
  • 12 They treated him shamefully
  • 13 Such great tribulation as has not been
  • 14 Some began to spit on him and strike him
  • 15 Striking his head and spitting on him
  • 16 As they mourned and wept

Luke

  • 1 They had no child, Elizabeth was barren
  • 2 Waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem
  • 3 He locked up John in prison
  • 4 For forty days, he ate nothing, he was hungry
  • 5 He would withdraw to desolate places and pray
  • 6 Blessed are you who weep now
  • 7 John the Baptist has come eating no bread
  • 8 They were filling with water and were in danger
  • 9 The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head
  • 10 Sending you out as lambs among wolves
  • 11 Some of you they will kill and persecute
  • 12 Do you think that I come to give peace?
  • 13 Blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices
  • 14 Invite those who cannot repay you
  • 15 Longing to be fed with what the pigs ate
  • 16 Lazarus was hungry and covered with sores
  • 17 But first he must suffer many things
  • 18 He will be mocked and shamefully treated
  • 19 Enemies will  tear you down to the ground
  • 20 But they also beat and treated him shamefully
  • 21 Great earthquakes, famines and persecution
  • 22 And being in agony, his sweat was like blood
  • 23 A great multitude mourning and lamenting
  • 24 Had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel

John

  • 1 –
  • 2 Destroy this temple (his body)
  • 3 So must the Son of Man be lifted up
  • 4  A prophet has no honor in his own hometown
  • 5 The Jews were seeking to kill him
  • 6 Judas was going to betray him
  • 7 Some wanted to arrest him
  • 8 So they picked up stones to throw at him
  • 9 And they cast him out
  • 10 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him
  • 11 So that they might arrest him
  • 12 He blinded their eyes, hardened their hearts
  • 13 One of you will betray me
  • 14 –
  • 15 –
  • 16 They will put you out of the synagogues
  • 17 I do not ask you to take them out of the world
  • 18 Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given?
  • 19 And struck him with their hands
  • 20 Doors locked for fear of the Jews
  • 21 Will carry you where you do not want to go

Acts

  • 1 Jesus came to them after his suffering
  • 2 But others mocked
  • 3 The prophets foretold that Christ would suffer
  • 4 When they had further threatened them
  • 5 Counted worthy of suffering dishonor
  • 6 A complaint arose about the daily distribution
  • 7 Enraged, they ground their teeth at him
  • 8 Dragged off men and women to prison
  • 9 I will show him how much he must suffer
  • 10 –
  • 11 Predicted a great famine for the whole world
  • 12 Peter was kept in prison
  • 13 They were worshiping the Lord and fasting
  • 14 Through many tribulations we must enter
  • 15 Some have troubled you, unsettling your minds
  • 16 Inflicted many blows and threw them in prison
  • 17 Explaining it was necessary for Christ to suffer
  • 18 They opposed and reviled him
  • 19 Dragged Paul’s companions into the theater
  • 20 In every city imprisonment and afflictions await
  • 21 The Jews will bind the man who owns this belt
  • 22 Imprisoned and beat those who believed
  • 23 Afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them
  • 24 Felix left Paul in prison
  • 25 Planning an ambush to kill him on the way
  • 26 The Jews seized me and tried to kill me
  • 27 All hope of being saved was at last abandoned
  • 28 For the hope of Israel I am wearing this chain

Romans

  • 1 Receiving in themselves the penalty for error
  • 2 Tribulation for everyone who does evil
  • 3 In their paths are ruin and misery
  • 4 He received the sign of circumcision
  • 5 We rejoice in our sufferings
  • 6 –
  • 7 Wretched man that I am!
  • 8 We are heirs if we suffer with him
  • 9 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish

  • 11 God gave them a spirit of stupor
  • 12 Be patient in tribulation
  • 13 He carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer

1 Corinthians

  • 1 God chose what is low and despised
  • 2 In weakness and fear and much trembling

  • 4 We hunger and thirst and are homeless
  • 5 Ought you not rather to mourn?
  • 6 Why not rather suffer wrong?
  • 7 Those who marry will have worldly troubles

  • 11 This is why many of you are weak and ill
  • 12 If one member suffers, all suffer together

  • 1 So utterly burdened we despaired of life itself

  • 12 Content with weaknesses, insults, hardships
  • 13 Test yourselves, to see if you are in faith

Galatians

  • 1 Some who trouble you

  • 4 My bodily ailment was a trial to you
  • 5 Why am I still being persecuted?

Ephesians
