A lot of what we do is barely mentioned in the New Testament. That doesn’t make these things wrong, but it should make us curious about what the other almost 8,000 verses are about. Here are a few examples. You could look for others. (They’re not all just one verse.)
Meeting Together – I think it’s only commanded once
- And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. – Hebrews 10:24-25
Singing – I found 12 verses
- Matthew 26:30, Mark 14:26, Acts 16:25, Romans 15:9, 1 Corinthians 14:15, Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, Hebrews 2:12, James 5:13, Revelation 5:9, Revelation 14:3, Revelation 15:3
Tithing – we’re not commanded to give a tenth; Jesus told the Pharisees to, but he put it in a wider context
- Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. – Luke 11:42
Bible Study – I think these are the only two
- Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. – Acts 17:11
- You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. – John 5:39-40
Leadership – these are all the verses I could find
- “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms: “‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, “‘May another take his place of leadership.’” – Acts 1:20
- Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. – Acts 15:22
- So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours – 1 Corinthians 3:21
- I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain. – Galatians 2:2
- Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. – Hebrews 13:7
- Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. – Hebrews 13:17
- Greet all your leaders and all the Lord’s people. Those from Italy send you their greetings. – Hebrews 13:24
Admittedly, this is just a word search. You may be able to find these concepts in other passages. But clearly these are not the main points they’re trying to get across.
So what is the New Testament imploring us to do?
